Seconds to Days/Hours/Minutes Converter

Enter a second count to convert it into a readable duration.

Result

1d 3h 46m 40s
27.78
1,666.67

How it is calculated

The seconds are split with whole-number division and remainders. days = ⌊s / 86400⌋, then the remainder is divided by 3600 for hours, the next remainder by 60 for minutes, and what is left is seconds. The result is written with the letters d, h, m and s, for example 1d 3h 46m 40s. A unit is left out only at the front: with no days the string starts at hours, and with no hours either it starts at minutes, but once a larger unit is shown, smaller ones appear even when they are 0 (so 3600 gives 1h 0m 0s). The tool also gives the total as decimal hours (s / 3600) and decimal minutes (s / 60), rounded to two decimals. Whole numbers from 0 up to 1015 are accepted, and 0 simply shows 0s; negative numbers and values with a fraction such as 90.5 give no result. A day is always 86,400 seconds, so clock changes and leap seconds are not considered.

Worked example

Convert 100000 seconds. Days: 100000 ÷ 86400 = 1, remainder 13600. Hours: 13600 ÷ 3600 = 3, remainder 2800. Minutes: 2800 ÷ 60 = 46, remainder 40. So the duration is 1d 3h 46m 40s. Totals: 100000 ÷ 3600 = 27.78 hours (27.7778 rounded), and 100000 ÷ 60 = 1,666.67 minutes. The answer to read aloud is one day, three hours, 46 minutes and 40 seconds.

Common mistakes

  • Entering minutes or milliseconds. The field is in seconds; 5 minutes must be typed as 300, and milliseconds must be divided by 1000 first.
  • Entering a value with a fraction, such as 90.5. Only whole seconds work, so round before entering.
  • Reading the total hours as hours and minutes. 27.78 hours is decimal, not 27 hours 78 minutes; the broken-down line gives the real clock time.
  • Reading 1h 0m 0s as a missing value. Zero units are shown on purpose once a larger unit appears.
  • Using the result for calendar spans. A day here is exactly 86,400 seconds, so the tool does not know about months, daylight saving or leap years.

About this calculator

Converting a raw second count into days, hours, minutes and seconds means repeatedly dividing by the size of each unit and keeping the remainder: dividing by 86,400 gives whole days, the remainder divided by 3,600 gives hours, that remainder divided by 60 gives minutes, and whatever is left over is seconds. The calculator also reports the total in just hours or just minutes, which is handy when you need a single decimal figure rather than a broken-down duration.

This kind of conversion comes up constantly in software development and media work: server logs and APIs often report durations, timeouts or uptimes as a raw second count, video and audio editing tools need a duration expressed as a timestamp, and anyone timing a workout, a recipe or a video render benefits from seeing a number like 9,045 seconds turned into a readable ‘2 hours, 30 minutes, 45 seconds.’

Enter any number of seconds and the calculator instantly breaks it down into a full days/hours/minutes/seconds duration, along with the equivalent total hours and total minutes.
