87.5%

How it is calculated

Attainment is actual / quota × 100, shown to one decimal place. The difference is actual − quota, displayed with a plus sign when the rep is at or above quota and a minus sign when below, using the absolute amount in dollars. The status line reads Quota met when actual is greater than or equal to quota, and Below quota otherwise. The status is decided on the exact figures, not on the rounded percentage, so 99,960 against 100,000 shows 100.0% with a difference of −$40.00 and still reads Below quota. The quota must be above zero. The tool does not apply commission tiers, accelerators or caps, and it does not prorate the quota for part-periods.

Worked example

A rep sold $87,500 against a quota of $100,000. Attainment: 87,500 / 100,000 × 100 = 87.5%. Difference: 87,500 − 100,000 = −12,500, shown as −$12,500.00. Since 87,500 is less than 100,000 the status is Below quota. The tool displays 87.5%, −$12,500.00 and Below quota. To reach 100% the rep would have needed another $12,500 in sales.

Common mistakes

  • Mixing periods, for example a monthly actual against an annual quota. Both must cover the same period or the percentage is meaningless.
  • Using bookings for one figure and revenue for the other. Quota and actual have to be measured the same way, as your plan defines it.
  • Reading 100.0% as proof the quota was met. A result rounded up from 99.96% displays 100.0% yet is flagged Below quota, so look at the status and the difference too.
  • Entering the quota as the over-quota target (stretch) when the plan pays on the base quota, or the other way round. Attainment changes completely with the denominator.
  • Assuming the percentage maps directly to commission. Most plans pay in tiers or with accelerators past 100%, which this tool does not apply.

About this calculator

Quota attainment is the standard sales-performance metric used to measure how a rep or team performed against their assigned target: attainment = actual sales ÷ quota, usually expressed as a percentage. A result above 100% means the quota was exceeded; below 100% means it was missed.

Beyond the headline percentage, sales operations teams also track the raw over/under amount — the dollar gap between actual sales and quota — since that figure feeds directly into commission calculations, accelerators, and forecasting for the next period.

Compare actual sales with the quota and you get the attainment percentage, how far over or under target you are and a simple met-or-below flag, the same figures commission plans and sales dashboards use.
