PTH Conversion Calculator

Enter a PTH value and pick the conversion direction.

Result

6.890 pmol/L
1 pg/mL = 0.106 pmol/L
65.000 pg/mL

How it is calculated

PTH results come as mass concentration (pg/mL) or molar concentration (pmol/L), and the tool links them with one fixed factor, 1 pg/mL = 0.106 pmol/L. From pg/mL to pmol/L it multiplies: pmol/L = pg/mL × 0.106. From pmol/L to pg/mL it divides: pg/mL = pmol/L ÷ 0.106, which is about 9.434 pg/mL per pmol/L. The answer is shown to three decimals (a very small non-zero answer keeps four significant digits, so 0.001 pg/mL shows as 0.0001060 pmol/L rather than 0.000), together with a check line that converts it back to the starting value. The direction field decides which way to go, and the default, also used for an unrecognised direction, is pg/mL to pmol/L. Zero is accepted, negative values return no result. The factor is for the PTH molecule as a whole; it is not an assay calibration and does not say whether a result is normal.

Worked example

A lab reports intact PTH as 65 pg/mL and you need it in pmol/L. Multiply by the factor: 65 × 0.106 = 6.890 pmol/L. The check line converts back, 6.890 ÷ 0.106 = 65.000 pg/mL, which confirms the arithmetic. In the opposite direction, a value of 6.9 pmol/L divided by 0.106 gives 65.094 pg/mL; the small difference from 65 comes from rounding the starting number. Compare results only after both are in the same unit.

Common mistakes

  • Choosing the wrong direction. A pmol/L figure typed with the pg/mL option gives a number about nine times too small, which may look plausible and go unnoticed.
  • Using pmol/L values with a pg/mL reference range from another lab, or the reverse. Convert the result, not the range, and check which unit the range is in.
  • Applying the conversion to a different hormone. The 0.106 factor comes from PTH's molecular weight and is wrong for calcitonin, vitamin D or any other analyte.
  • Comparing results from different PTH assays as if they were the same. Unit conversion does not correct for differences between methods.
  • Rounding the factor by hand to 0.1. This changes every result by about 6%, so use the tool's value.

About this calculator

Parathyroid hormone (PTH) is an 84-amino-acid peptide secreted by the parathyroid glands that raises blood calcium by mobilizing it from bone, increasing renal reabsorption, and activating vitamin D — its level is a key test in diagnosing hyperparathyroidism, hypoparathyroidism, and chronic kidney disease-related bone disorders. Labs report it in either mass units (pg/mL) or molar units (pmol/L) depending on the country and assay, which makes unit confusion a real risk when comparing results across labs.

The conversion uses PTH's molecular weight of roughly 9,400 daltons, giving the factor 1 pg/mL = 0.106 pmol/L (equivalently, 1 pmol/L ≈ 9.43 pg/mL). This calculator converts a PTH value in either direction so results from different reference ranges can be compared directly; as with any lab-value tool, it is informational only and not a substitute for a clinician's interpretation.
