How it is calculated
The tool assumes 1 standard lot equals 100,000 units of the base currency. It computes units = lots × 100,000 and pip value in quote currency = pip size × units. That amount is then divided by the quote rate to get your account currency: pip value = pip size × units / rate. Pip size is 0.0001 for most pairs and 0.01 for yen pairs. The rate is how many units of the pair's quote currency equal one unit of your account currency: enter 1 when the quote currency is your account currency (for example EUR/USD with a USD account), or the current USD/JPY-style rate when the quote currency is the yen. Spreads and commissions are not included.
Worked example
Trade 0.5 lots of USD/JPY (pip size 0.01) with a USD account and a rate of 150 yen per dollar. Units = 0.5 × 100,000 = 50,000. Pip value in yen = 0.01 × 50,000 = 500.00. Converted to dollars: 500 / 150 = $3.33 per pip. A 40-pip stop would therefore risk about 40 × 3.33 = $133.
Common mistakes
- Entering lots as units: 0.5 means half a standard lot, not 0.5 units, and 100,000 would be a 100,000-lot trade.
- Using 0.0001 on a yen pair: yen pairs quote to two decimals, so the pip is 0.01 and the value would be 100 times too small.
- Leaving the rate at 1 for a pair whose quote currency is not your account currency, which gives the pip value in the wrong currency.
- Entering the rate upside down (dollars per yen instead of yen per dollar), which inflates the pip value hundreds of times.
- Confusing a pip with a pipette (a tenth of a pip) when counting how far price moved.
About this calculator
A pip is the smallest standardized price move in a forex pair — 0.0001 for most pairs, 0.01 for pairs quoted in Japanese yen — and its dollar value depends on the lot size traded and the exchange rate of the quote currency: pip value = pip size × lot size, converted into your account currency at the current quote-currency exchange rate. For a standard lot (100,000 units) of a pair quoted directly against the U.S. dollar, one pip is worth $10; for mini and micro lots, or cross pairs, the value scales down or requires the extra conversion step.
Forex traders calculate pip value before placing a trade because it is the missing link between a stop-loss distance in pips and the actual dollar risk on the position — a 50-pip stop means something very different in dollar terms on a micro lot versus a standard lot, and skipping this step is a common cause of oversized, unintended risk.
