Percentage of a Number Calculator

Find a percentage of any number

How it is calculated

The answer is the share of the number that the percentage represents:

result = percent / 100 × value

percent is the rate in percent (15 means 15 %), and value is the whole you are taking the share of, in any unit. The result has the same unit as the value and is rounded to two decimals. Decimal rates such as 7.5 work, and a negative percent gives a negative result. The tool returns only the part itself, not the total after adding or subtracting it, so you do that last step yourself.

Worked example

A 15 % discount on an item priced 2450.

  1. Convert the rate: 15 / 100 = 0.15
  2. Multiply: 0.15 × 2450 = 367.50

The discount is 367.50. The price after discount is 2450 − 367.50 = 2082.50, and the price with 15 % added would be 2817.50.

Common mistakes

  • Entering 0.15 instead of 15: the field takes percent, so 0.15 means 0.15 % and gives 3.68.
  • Treating the result as the new price: it is only the discount or surcharge amount, which you still subtract from or add to the original.
  • Using this for the reverse question (what percent is 367.5 of 2450?): that needs the value divided by the whole, a different calculation.
  • Applying two percentages one after another and adding them: 10 % off then 10 % off is not 20 % off, because the second is taken from the reduced price.

About this calculator

This calculator applies the basic percentage formula, result = (X / 100) × N, converting a percentage into a decimal fraction of the base number N. It's the same arithmetic whether you're finding 15% of 200 or 7.5% of 4,300 — divide the percentage by 100, then multiply.

Shoppers use it to work out a discount or sales tax at checkout, tippers use it to calculate a restaurant gratuity, and it underlies far more specialized calculations too — commission rates, interest amounts and grade weightings are all, at their core, just a percentage of a number.
