Lawn Mowing Time Calculator

Find out how long mowing your lawn will take.

How it is calculated

The tool divides the lawn area by the effective area the mower clears each minute: minutes = area ÷ (deck/12 × speed × 88 × efficiency/100). area is in square feet, deck is the cutting width in inches (divided by 12 to get feet), speed is walking or riding speed in miles per hour (one mph equals 88 feet per minute), and efficiency is a percentage that allows for overlap, turns and obstacles. All four inputs must be above zero. The result is in minutes with one decimal. It covers cutting time only, not trimming, emptying the bag or setting up.

Worked example

A 5,000 sq ft lawn is mown with a 21 in deck at 3 mph and 80% efficiency. The deck is 21 ÷ 12 = 1.75 ft and the speed is 3 × 88 = 264 ft/min. The effective rate is 1.75 × 264 × 0.80 = 369.6 sq ft per minute. Dividing 5,000 by 369.6 gives 13.5 min.

Common mistakes

  • Entering the area in square metres or the deck in centimetres. The tool expects square feet and inches.
  • Entering speed in km/h. It must be miles per hour, so a walking pace is around 3, not 5.
  • Setting efficiency to 100%. Overlap between passes and turning at the ends always waste some width, so a lower figure is more realistic.
  • Using the mower's overall width instead of the cutting width of the deck, which overestimates the swath.
  • Including flower beds, patios or the house footprint in the area when only the grass is being cut.

About this calculator

This calculator divides your lawn's area by the area your mower covers per minute — cutting width × mowing speed, scaled by an overlap and turning efficiency percentage you set (since every pass overlaps the previous one slightly to avoid missed strips, and time is lost turning at each end of a row) — to give a realistic total.

Homeowners use it to plan yard work around their schedule, and lawn care businesses use the same logic to quote jobs and route crews — knowing roughly how long a property will take, based on its area and the mower being used, is the basis for per-visit pricing.
