Imperial Pint to US Pint Converter

Enter a value and choose a direction to convert imperial and US pints.

Result

2.4019 US pt
1,136.52 mL
1 imperial pt = 1.20095 US pt

How it is calculated

The tool uses one fixed ratio, 1 imperial pint = 1.20095 US pints, which comes from 568.261 mL per imperial pint and 473.176 mL per US pint (568.261 ÷ 473.176). Imperial to US: US pints = imperial pints × 1.20095. US to imperial: imperial pints = US pints ÷ 1.20095. The converted amount is shown to four decimals. The tool also gives the volume in millilitres, using the millilitre size of the pint you typed, and the factor for one unit. The value must be above zero. The direction decides which pint your number is in: if it is left out, imperial to US is used, but a direction the tool does not recognise gives no result. Only pints are converted; fluid ounces and cups differ between the two systems too.

Worked example

A British recipe calls for 2 imperial pints of milk and you only have a US measuring jug. Multiply by the ratio: 2 × 1.20095 = 2.4019 US pints. In millilitres: 2 × 568.261 = 1,136.52 mL. The tool shows 2.4019 US pt, 1,136.52 mL, and the reminder that 1 imperial pt = 1.20095 US pt. Going the other way, 2 US pints become 2 ÷ 1.20095 = 1.6653 imperial pints, or 946.35 mL.

Common mistakes

  • Choosing the wrong direction. A value meant as US pints but run as imperial to US is multiplied instead of divided by 1.20095, so it ends up about 44% too high.
  • Treating the two pints as equal. A 16 fl oz US pint is about 17% smaller than a 20 fl oz imperial pint, so a pint of beer is a different amount in a British and an American pub.
  • Mixing up the pint with the fluid ounce. An imperial fluid ounce is not the same as a US fluid ounce, so convert pints with this tool rather than counting ounces.
  • Assuming the dry pint is the same as the liquid pint. This tool covers the US liquid pint only, and dry measure uses a different volume.
  • Entering zero or a negative amount. The value must be above zero, so the tool returns nothing for those inputs.

About this calculator

The word “pint” means two different volumes depending on which side of the Atlantic you’re on. An imperial pint (UK, Ireland, and used across the Commonwealth for draught beer) equals 20 imperial fluid ounces or 568.26 mL, while a US pint equals 16 US fluid ounces or 473.18 mL — so one imperial pint holds about 1.20095 US pints, roughly a fifth more liquid.

This gap trips up homebrewers following recipes from the other country, bartenders and pub owners moving between British and American beer service, and travelers ordering “a pint” who are surprised by the different pour size. This converter applies the 1.20095 factor in either direction, so you can enter a value and instantly get the equivalent in the other pint standard.
