Hectares to Acres Converter
Enter a value in hectares to convert it to acres, square metres.

How it is calculated
Enter an area in hectares (ha). The tool multiplies it by a fixed factor to get acres and by 10,000 to get square metres:
acres = ha × 2.4710538
m² = ha × 10 000
Acres are shown with four decimals and square metres as a whole number with thousands separators. The factor is applied as written, so the acre result is a rounded display of a longer number. To go the other way, divide by the same factor: one acre is about 0.4047 ha. The tool does not block negative numbers; it just returns a negative area, which has no physical meaning. Only the international acre is used, not regional historical acres or the survey acre.
Worked example
A farm of 2.5 ha:
- Acres: 2.5 × 2.4710538 = 6.1776345, shown with four decimals as 6.1776.
- Square metres: 2.5 × 10 000 = 25,000.
The tool displays 6.1776 ac and 25,000 m². Check: 6.1776 acres × 0.4047 ≈ 2.5 ha, which matches the start.
Common mistakes
- Typing a decimal comma such as 2,5. The field expects a decimal point (2.5); a comma-formatted number gives no result.
- Mixing up hectares with acres and multiplying when you should divide. One hectare is larger than two acres, so the acre figure is always about 2.5 times the hectare figure.
- Confusing hectares with square kilometres. 1 km² is 100 ha, so 3 km² must be entered as 300 ha.
- Reading the square metre line as acres or the reverse because both appear together. Check the unit suffix, ac or m², before copying a figure into a document.
- Rounding the result by hand and converting back. 6.18 acres converts back to about 2.501 ha, so keep the four decimals when precision matters, for example in a land deed.
About this calculator
A hectare is exactly 10,000 square metres (a 100 m × 100 m square) and converts to 2.47105 acres, since an acre is defined as 4,840 square yards (roughly the area a team of oxen could plow in a day, historically). The hectare is the standard metric unit for land area worldwide, while the acre remains the everyday unit in the US, UK, and a handful of other countries for real estate and agriculture.
Farmers, land surveyors, real-estate professionals, and agricultural economists convert between the two constantly when comparing farm sizes, crop yields (tonnes/hectare vs. bushels/acre), or land prices across a metric country and an acre-based one.
