Grass Plug Calculator
Enter your lawn area and plug spacing to find how many grass plugs you need.

How it is calculated
You enter the planting area in square feet and the distance between plugs in inches, measured centre to centre in a square grid. The tool converts the spacing to feet, spacing ft = inches ÷ 12, and squares it to get the ground each plug is responsible for: coverage = (spacing ft)² in square feet. The count is plugs = area ÷ coverage, always rounded up to the next whole plug with a ceiling, since you cannot plant a fraction of a plug. It also shows how many plugs go into each 100 square feet, 100 ÷ coverage. Both values must be above zero. The result is the exact grid count for the area you type: it does not add a spare allowance for dead plugs, odd-shaped edges or irrigation, so order a little extra if you want a safety margin.
Worked example
A lawn of 1,500 sq ft is to be planted with plugs 9 inches apart. Spacing in feet: 9 ÷ 12 = 0.75 ft. Coverage per plug: 0.75 × 0.75 = 0.5625 sq ft, shown as 0.56 sq ft. Number of plugs: 1,500 ÷ 0.5625 = 2,666.67, rounded up to 2,667 plugs. Per 100 sq ft the tool shows 177.8 plugs (100 ÷ 0.5625). Widening the spacing to 12 inches on the same lawn would need 1,500 plugs, which is nearly half as many.
Common mistakes
- Entering the area in square metres or the spacing in centimetres. The area field is square feet and spacing is inches, so a 100 m² lawn is about 1,076 sq ft and 20 cm is about 8 inches.
- Using the plug diameter as the spacing. The spacing is the distance from the middle of one plug to the middle of the next, not the width of the plug.
- Halving the spacing and expecting double the plugs. The count rises with the square of the change, so 6 inches needs four times as many plugs as 12 inches.
- Ordering exactly the result. It already rounds up, but it adds nothing for dead plugs, trimming around beds or plugs placed in a staggered pattern.
- Measuring the whole property rather than the bare area. Subtract driveways, beds and trees so you only count ground that will actually be planted.
About this calculator
Grass plugs are small, rooted sections of turfgrass planted in a grid across bare or thin soil to establish a new lawn without full sodding or seeding — common with warm-season grasses like zoysia, St. Augustine and bermuda that spread by runners and fill in the gaps between plugs over time. The number needed follows directly from geometry: plugs = lawn area ÷ (spacing in inches ÷ 12)², since each plug effectively “owns” a square of that spacing on a side. This calculator runs that formula for your area and chosen spacing.
The tool is aimed at homeowners and landscaping contractors planning a lawn renovation, since plug spacing is a real cost-versus-speed tradeoff: tighter spacing (like 6 inches) fills in faster but needs far more plugs and money than wider spacing (like 12 inches), which is cheaper but leaves the lawn patchy for longer while the grass spreads. Getting the plug count right before ordering avoids both running short mid-project and over-ordering material that won't get used.
