GPA to Percentage Calculator
Turn GPA into a percent.
Result
How it is calculated
Enter your gpa and the maximum of your grading scale (for example 4, 4.3, 5 or 10) as plain numbers. The tool expresses the GPA as a share of the maximum: percentage = GPA / scale × 100, shown with 2 decimals. The conversion is strictly linear, so every scale uses the same proportional rule and no band tables or country-specific curves are applied. A GPA above the scale, a negative GPA, or a scale of zero or less returns no result, while a GPA of 0 gives 0.00%. Treat the answer as an estimate, because universities and credential evaluators often use their own conversion tables.
Worked example
A student has a GPA of 3.4 on a 4.0 scale. Divide: 3.4 / 4 = 0.85. Multiply by 100: 0.85 × 100 = 85.00%. If the same 3.4 were reported on a 4.3 scale, the tool would give 3.4 / 4.3 × 100 = 79.07%, which shows how much the choice of scale matters. On a 10-point scale, a GPA of 8.2 comes to exactly 82.00%.
Common mistakes
- Choosing the wrong scale. The same 3.4 is 85.00% out of 4.0 but only 79.07% out of 4.3, so use the maximum printed on your transcript.
- Entering a weighted GPA above the scale, for example 4.5 on a 4.0 scale. The tool gives no result; either enter the matching weighted maximum as the scale, or use the unweighted GPA.
- Treating the result as an official equivalent. The linear ratio is a rough guide; many institutions grade differently and publish their own conversions.
- Typing a percentage or a letter grade into the GPA field. It expects a number on the scale, such as 3.4.
About this calculator
There is no single universal formula for converting a GPA to a percentage, because grading scales differ by country and institution — but the most common approximations are percentage ≈ GPA × 20 on a 5.0 scale, and percentage ≈ GPA × 25 (or a formula like (GPA / 4) × 100) on a 4.0 scale, both derived from simply expressing your GPA as a fraction of the maximum possible score.
Students applying to universities abroad run into this constantly: a US transcript reports a 4.0-scale GPA, an Indian or Turkish transcript might use a 10.0 or 4.0 scale with different weighting, and foreign admissions offices often ask applicants to self-convert to a percentage for initial screening even though official evaluators use their own conversion tables (like WES or ECE) for the final decision. Because grading rigor varies so much between schools, this kind of conversion is always an estimate — useful for a ballpark comparison, not a substitute for an institution’s official equivalency assessment.
