How it is calculated

A fraction of a number is that number times the fraction: result = (numerator / denominator) × number. The tool first divides the numerator by the denominator to get f = numerator / denominator, then multiplies by the number. It also shows the fraction as a percentage, f × 100, so 5/8 becomes 62.50%, and echoes the fraction back with up to four decimals (a numerator of 0.625 appears as 0.625 / 1). The result is rounded to two decimals, so 1/3 of 100 is 33.33. A denominator of 0 gives no result. A negative denominator is moved to the numerator, so 3 / −4 is shown as −3 / 4. Other values are taken as typed: the numerator may exceed the denominator (7/4 gives 175%), may have decimals, and negative values give a negative result.

Worked example

Find 5/8 of 360. Divide the numerator by the denominator: 5 ÷ 8 = 0.625. Multiply by the number: 0.625 × 360 = 225. The tool shows 225.00, with the fraction line 5 / 8. As a percentage, 0.625 × 100 = 62.50%. A check by another route: one eighth of 360 is 45, and five eighths is 5 × 45 = 225, the same result.

Common mistakes

  • Swapping the numerator and the denominator. 8/5 of 360 is 576, not 225; the top number is the part, the bottom number is the number of equal parts.
  • Typing a percentage in the numerator, such as 62.5 for 5/8, and leaving the denominator at 10. That is correct only when the denominator is 100; with 10 the tool returns 2,250.00 and 625.00%.
  • Putting the minus sign on the denominator and expecting it to be ignored. It is moved to the numerator, so 3 over −4 gives a negative result of −150.00 for 200.
  • Entering a denominator of 0 while sorting out the inputs. This gives no result at all.
  • Confusing the result with the remainder. The tool gives the part (225 of 360), not what is left over (135).

About this calculator

Finding a fraction of a number means multiplying that number by the fraction, for example finding three-quarters of 200 is simply 200 × (3/4) = 150, and this calculator also converts the fraction into its equivalent percentage so you can see both forms of the same relationship side by side.

This basic operation underlies everyday calculations far beyond the classroom: working out a discount or tip, splitting a bill or recipe in fractional portions, calculating what fraction of a budget, workforce or dataset a certain part represents, and converting between fractions and percentages when reading statistics or financial reports.
