How it is calculated

The engagement rate is the total number of interactions divided by the audience size, as a percentage: rate = interactions ÷ reach × 100. The tool also gives engagements per 1,000 people: interactions ÷ reach × 1000, which is the rate multiplied by 10. Interactions are the sum of the actions you count (likes, comments, shares, saves). The second field can be reach for one post or the follower count for an account, and the tool does not know which; the result is only meaningful against other numbers built the same way. Reach must be at least 1 and interactions cannot be negative. The rate can exceed 100% because one person can interact more than once.

Worked example

A post collects 420 interactions in total and reached 12,500 people. Engagement rate: 420 ÷ 12,500 = 0.0336, and times 100 gives 3.36%. Per 1,000 people reached: 420 ÷ 12,500 × 1000 = 33.60 engagements. If you used the follower count of 40,000 instead of the reach, the same 420 interactions would show 420 ÷ 40,000 = 1.05%, so state which denominator you used before comparing.

Common mistakes

  • Mixing reach-based and follower-based rates. The same post gives 3.36% against its reach of 12,500 but 1.05% against 40,000 followers, so only compare rates built on the same denominator.
  • Using impressions, which count repeat views, in the reach field. Impressions are normally higher than reach, so the rate comes out lower than a true reach-based figure.
  • Counting different actions from one platform to the next. Likes alone and likes plus comments, shares and saves give very different totals, so use the same list of actions each time.
  • Entering the rate as a ratio of followers who engaged. The tool divides actions by audience, so a person who likes and comments counts twice.
  • Judging a post on a very small audience. A reach of 100 with 420 interactions returns 420.00%, which is possible when people interact repeatedly but is not a useful benchmark.

About this calculator

Engagement rate turns raw interaction counts (likes, comments, shares, saves) into a comparable percentage by dividing total interactions ÷ reach or follower count — reach-based engagement measures interactions against the people who actually saw the content, while follower-based engagement measures it against the whole audience regardless of who saw a given post. This calculator also reports engagements per 1,000 people reached, a normalized figure that makes posts and accounts of very different sizes easier to compare.

Because a post with a huge reach but few interactions can look impressive in raw numbers while actually underperforming, engagement rate is the metric social platforms and advertisers actually weigh when judging content quality and audience resonance. Social media managers, influencer-marketing teams and brand marketers use engagement rate to benchmark content performance, compare influencers before a partnership, and prove campaign value beyond simple follower counts.
