Differential Leveling Calculator
Enter your benchmark elevation, backsight and foresight readings to find the new elevation.

How it is calculated
One instrument setup is evaluated in two steps. First the height of instrument: HI = BM + BS, where BM is the benchmark elevation and BS the backsight rod reading on it. Then the new point: elevation = HI − FS, with FS the foresight rod reading on the new point. The tool also shows the net change rise = BS − FS: a positive value means the new point is higher than the benchmark, a negative value (a fall) means it is lower.
All results are in metres with three decimals, so enter readings in metres. The benchmark may be negative or zero, but a negative rod reading is rejected because a rod cannot read below its base. The tool handles a single setup only; for a longer line, use the new elevation as the next benchmark and repeat. It does not check closure errors or apply corrections for curvature and refraction.
Worked example
A benchmark has an elevation of 100 m. The backsight reading on it is 1.525 m, so the height of instrument is HI = 100 + 1.525 = 101.525 m. The rod is then held on the new point and the foresight reads 2.310 m. New elevation = 101.525 − 2.310 = 99.215 m. Rise = 1.525 − 2.310 = −0.785 m, a negative number meaning the ground fell by 0.785 m between the two points.
Common mistakes
- Subtracting the backsight and adding the foresight. A high rod reading means the point is low, so the backsight is added to the benchmark and the foresight is subtracted.
- Swapping backsight and foresight. The backsight is the reading on the point of known elevation, and the foresight is on the new point.
- Entering readings in feet or centimetres. Results are labelled in metres, so convert rod readings to metres first.
- Reading a negative rise as an error. A negative value is a fall; in the example it means the new point is lower than the benchmark.
- Moving or re-levelling the instrument between the two readings. Both must come from the same setup, otherwise the height of instrument is no longer the same.
About this calculator
Differential leveling is a surveying technique for transferring a known elevation from a benchmark (BM) to a new point using a leveling instrument and a graduated rod. The surveyor first reads a backsight (BS) — the rod reading taken on the point of known elevation — and adds it to the benchmark’s elevation to get the height of instrument (HI = BM elevation + BS), which is the elevation of the instrument’s horizontal line of sight regardless of where the instrument itself is set up.
The rod is then moved to the new point and a foresight (FS) reading is taken; subtracting it from the height of instrument gives the new point’s elevation: new elevation = HI − FS. The difference between backsight and foresight also tells the surveyor whether the ground rose or fell between the two points (rise if BS exceeds FS, fall if the reverse). Civil engineers, land surveyors, and construction crews use this chained BS/FS procedure — often over many setups in sequence — to run elevation control across a site for grading, drainage design, and construction layout; this calculator applies one setup’s BM, backsight, and foresight to find the new elevation.
