How it is calculated

The harvest date is calendar arithmetic: harvest date = planting date + N days, where N is the days to maturity from the seed packet, rounded to a whole number (52.6 becomes 53). The growing period is also shown as weeks = N / 7 and months = N / 30.44, each to one decimal; 30.44 is the average month length. The date comes back as YYYY-MM-DD. The planting date must be text the tool can read as a date, otherwise there is no result, and an impossible date such as 2026-02-30 also gives no result. The tool does not adjust for weather, frost or soil temperature, so the date is an estimate under average conditions.

Worked example

Suppose a crop is sown on 2026-05-10 and the packet says 75 days to maturity. Counting forward, 21 days finish May, 30 more finish June (51 days), and the remaining 24 days land on 24 July. The tool shows a harvest date of 2026-07-24. The growing period appears as 75 / 7 = 10.7 wk and 75 / 30.44 = 2.5 mo, so the crop needs about ten and a half weeks without a hard frost.

Common mistakes

  • Counting from the wrong start: many packets give days from transplanting, not from sowing. For transplants, enter the transplant date, not the seed-starting date.
  • Treating the date as a promise. Cool weather can add days, so many growers keep a buffer of a week or more before the first frost.
  • Entering a negative number of days. A harvest cannot come before planting, so a negative number gives no result; enter the days to maturity from the seed packet.
  • Typing a range such as 60-70 as a single value. The field takes one number, so run the two ends separately to get an earliest and latest date.
  • Reading 2.5 mo as 2 months and 5 days. It is a decimal: about 2.5 months of average length.

About this calculator

A crop's days to maturity (DTM) is the number of days from planting or transplanting until it's typically ready to harvest, a figure printed on virtually every seed packet and used by agricultural extension services to build regional planting calendars. This calculator adds that DTM value to your planting date to project the expected harvest date, then converts the growing period into weeks and months so you can plan succession plantings or check it against your area's first-frost date.

Home gardeners, market growers and small-farm planners use days-to-harvest figures to stagger plantings for a continuous supply — for example, sowing lettuce (DTM ~45–55 days) every two weeks — or to work backward from a target frost date to find the latest safe planting window for a long-season crop like winter squash (DTM ~90–100 days). Because DTM assumes average conditions, growers also treat the projected date as a guideline that shifts with local weather, soil temperature and variety.
