Customer Effort Score (CES) Calculator
Turn survey scores into a single CES number.

How it is calculated
The tool takes the mean of the survey answers: CES = total score ÷ number of responses. Total score is the sum of every individual rating, for example all the 1-to-5 answers added together, and the number of responses is how many people answered. Both must be whole numbers, because ratings and respondents are counted in units; a fractional total or response count gives no result, and neither does zero responses or a negative total. The result is shown to two decimals on the same scale you used in the survey, so a 1 to 7 survey gives a number between 1 and 7. The tool has no field for the scale, so it cannot tell you if your total is too large for the scale. It gives only the average, not the spread or the share of easy answers. Always compare scores gathered on the same scale and wording.
Worked example
After a support chat, 300 customers rated how easy it was on a 1 to 5 scale (5 is very easy). Adding all the ratings gives a total score of 1,342. Step 1: divide the total by the responses: 1342 ÷ 300 = 4.4733. Step 2: rounded to two decimals, the customer effort score is 4.47. On a 5-point scale that is high, meaning most customers found it easy. Check: the best possible total for 300 responses is 1,500, so 1,342 is about 89% of it.
Common mistakes
- Entering the average as the total score. The first field needs the sum of all ratings, and it must be a whole number: typing 4.5 with 300 responses gives no result, and typing 4 would give a meaningless 0.01.
- Entering the number of surveys sent instead of the number answered. Only people who responded count.
- Mixing 1-to-5 and 1-to-7 surveys in one total. The average is only meaningful if everyone answered on the same scale.
- Forgetting that scales can run the opposite way. If 1 means very easy, a lower score is better, so read the result against your own scale direction.
- Comparing your CES with a score from a different question. Wording such as "how easy" and "how much effort" can produce opposite scales and different averages.
About this calculator
The Customer Effort Score (CES) is a customer-experience metric built around a single survey question: 'How easy was it to get your issue resolved (or complete your task)?', usually answered on a 1-5 or 1-7 scale from 'very difficult' to 'very easy'. CES is calculated as the average of all responses, and it was popularized by CEB (now Gartner) research showing that reducing customer effort predicts loyalty better than simply delighting customers.
Support and customer-experience (CX) teams track CES after interactions like a support ticket, live chat, or onboarding flow, using it alongside NPS (Net Promoter Score) and CSAT (Customer Satisfaction Score) to get a fuller picture: NPS measures long-term advocacy, CSAT measures satisfaction with one moment, and CES measures friction. A low average effort score is one of the strongest predictors of repeat purchases and reduced churn, because customers who struggle to get help are far more likely to switch providers even if the outcome was eventually resolved.
This calculator takes your total score across all responses and the number of responses, then returns the average CES so you can benchmark it against your own historical trend or industry norms.
