How it is calculated

The bonus has two parts that are added together. percent bonus = salary × bonus_pct ÷ 100, then total bonus = percent bonus + flat_bonus. The tool also divides the total by 12 as a monthly equivalent, total bonus ÷ 12, which only makes sense if the salary is a yearly figure and the bonus is paid once a year. The result is the gross amount before income tax and social contributions, which are not applied here and differ by country. The percentage works on the salary you type, so enter base pay, not base plus overtime, unless your plan says otherwise. Both parts may be zero. A flat bonus field must be filled in (type 0 if none), and negative values give no result. The tool does not check plan caps or payout multipliers.

Worked example

Your yearly salary is 72000, the target bonus is 10% and you also receive a 1500 flat award. Step 1: percent bonus = 72000 × 10 ÷ 100 = $7,200.00. Step 2: total bonus = 7200 + 1500 = $8,700.00. Step 3: spread over twelve months this is 8700 ÷ 12 = $725.00 a month. This is a gross figure: a 20% tax rate, for example, would leave about 6960, so check how your payroll withholds tax on bonuses.

Common mistakes

  • Entering a monthly salary and reading the monthly equivalent as a pay rise. The percentage applies to whatever salary you type, and the monthly figure divides the total by 12, so use the yearly salary.
  • Typing the bonus percentage as a fraction (0.10). The field is in percent, so 10.
  • Treating the total as take-home pay. It is before tax, and payroll often withholds a higher rate on a one-off payment.
  • Leaving the flat bonus empty when there is none. The field needs 0, otherwise no result appears.
  • Assuming the target is what you will receive. Plans often scale the payout up or down with company or personal performance, which this tool does not model.

About this calculator

Performance-based compensation plans commonly set a target bonus as a percentage of base salary rather than a flat dollar figure, so the same bonus target scales automatically with pay grade and can be layered with an additional flat bonus amount for spot awards or sign-on incentives.

This calculator multiplies your salary by the target bonus percentage and adds any flat bonus amount to compute the total bonus payout — the same arithmetic an HR or finance team uses to translate a stated bonus target into an actual dollar figure before taxes.
