ATM Fee Calculator

Enter the fee per withdrawal and withdrawals per month to find the annual ATM fee cost.

How it is calculated

The calculation is plain multiplication: monthly cost = fee per withdrawal × withdrawals per month and annual cost = monthly cost × 12. It also reports the number of withdrawals over the year, withdrawals per month × 12. Enter the total fee charged for one withdrawal: if the machine's owner charges one amount and your own bank adds another, add the two together first. Amounts are shown in dollars. Both fields accept zero or any positive number, including decimals, but not negative values. The tool does not model percentage-based foreign-currency fees, balance-inquiry fees or monthly free-withdrawal allowances; if your bank gives some free withdrawals, enter only the ones you pay for.

Worked example

Suppose each out-of-network withdrawal costs 4.50 in combined fees (2.50 from the operator plus 2.00 from your bank) and you make 3 such withdrawals a month. The monthly cost is 4.50 × 3 = $13.50. Over twelve months that is 13.50 × 12 = $162.00 a year, spread across 36 withdrawals. Cutting the habit to one withdrawal a month would lower the yearly total to $54.00.

Common mistakes

  • Entering only the machine owner's fee and forgetting the surcharge your own bank adds. The fee field should hold the sum of both.
  • Counting every withdrawal, including the free in-network ones. Only withdrawals that actually carry a fee belong in the monthly count.
  • Entering the number of withdrawals per year in the monthly field. The tool multiplies by 12 itself, so this overstates the cost twelve times.
  • Ignoring a monthly free-withdrawal allowance. If the first two are free, enter only the extra paid ones.
  • Expecting the result to include currency-conversion charges abroad, which are usually a percentage and not a fixed fee per withdrawal.

About this calculator

Out-of-network ATM fees are charged when you withdraw cash from a machine outside your bank's network — often twice over, once by the ATM operator and again by your own bank as an out-of-network surcharge — and because each individual fee looks small, few people ever add up what it costs them over a full year.

This calculator multiplies the fee per withdrawal by the number of withdrawals per month and annualizes it, turning a $3-per-trip habit into a concrete yearly total. Seeing the number in one place is often what pushes people toward fee-free ATM networks, cash-back withdrawals at checkout, or a bank that reimburses out-of-network fees.
