Activation Rate Calculator
Enter activated users and total signups to find the activation rate.

How it is calculated
You supply two counts from the same group of new users: how many reached your activation event and how many signed up in total.
activation rate = activated ÷ signups × 100not activated = signups − activated
The rate is shown as a percentage with two decimals. Signups must be at least 1, activated users cannot be negative, and activated cannot exceed signups, so a count of activated users larger than the signups gives no result. Which action counts as "activated" is your decision; the tool only does the division, so the number is only as meaningful as the definition behind it and the cohort you chose.
Worked example
In March, 1,250 people signed up and 380 of them created their first project, which is the team's activation event. The rate is 380 ÷ 1,250 = 0.304, or 30.40%. The users who did not activate number 1,250 − 380 = 870. If an onboarding change lifts the activated count to 450 from the same 1,250 signups, the rate becomes 36.00%, a gain of 5.6 percentage points.
Common mistakes
- Counting people who activated in March but signed up in February. Activation should be measured on one signup cohort; mixing cohorts can push activated above signups, which the tool rejects.
- Using all active users as the denominator. The base here is signups, not the entire user list, so a company with 20,000 old users and 1,250 new ones should enter 1,250.
- Defining activation as just logging in once. Activation is meant to be the action tied to real value; if the bar is too low the rate looks high and tells you nothing.
- Mixing up activation with conversion to paid or with retention. A user who activated may never pay, and one who pays may have activated long ago.
- Comparing rates built on different windows. A rate measured within 1 day and one measured within 30 days of signup are not comparable.
About this calculator
Activation rate is the share of new signups who reach the “aha moment” — the point in a product where a user experiences its core value for the first time, like sending a first message, creating a first project, or completing onboarding — divided by total signups.
This metric sits at the heart of product-led growth (PLG): a low activation rate means people are signing up but never actually experiencing what makes the product valuable, which is usually a much bigger leak than acquisition or even retention. Product managers and growth teams define their own activation event based on user behavior data correlated with long-term retention, then track this rate to prioritize onboarding fixes. Divide activated users by total signups for the activation rate; the page also counts the signups who never reached that first key action.
