How it is calculated

The tool turns a percentage from a blood differential into a real cell count: ANC = WBC × 1000 × (segs + bands) ÷ 100. WBC is the white cell count in thousands of cells per microlitre (the ×10³/µL unit on most lab reports, so 3.2 means 3,200 cells), segs is the percentage of segmented neutrophils and bands is the percentage of band neutrophils. If the bands field is empty it counts as 0. The tool shows the ANC in cells/µL, the combined neutrophil percentage and the ANC in ×10³/µL. Values must not be negative. It does not check that the percentages are sensible, nor does it grade the result.

Worked example

A report shows WBC 3.2 ×10³/µL, segmented neutrophils 38% and bands 4%. Combined neutrophils: 38 + 4 = 42%. Convert the white count to cells: 3.2 × 1000 = 3,200 per µL. Then 3,200 × 42 ÷ 100 = 1,344 /µL, which is also 1.34 ×10³/µL. Note that the percentages sum to 42%, but the real count depends on how low the total WBC is.

Common mistakes

  • Entering the WBC as cells per µL (for example 3200) instead of thousands per µL (3.2); the result would be 1,000 times too large.
  • Leaving out the band neutrophils: the ANC counts segmented and band forms together, so ignoring bands can understate it.
  • Entering the neutrophil fraction as a decimal (0.42) rather than a percentage (42).
  • Using the total neutrophil percentage and also adding bands on top, which counts the bands twice; enter segs and bands as two separate values.
  • Using the number as a treatment decision on its own; interpretation depends on the patient and the lab, and needs a clinician.

About this calculator

The absolute neutrophil count (ANC) is calculated from a complete blood count as ANC = WBC × (% segmented neutrophils + % band neutrophils) ÷ 100, converting the neutrophil percentage from a differential into a real cell count per microliter of blood, since percentages alone can be misleading when total white cell counts are abnormal.

ANC is the standard marker for neutropenia: values below roughly 1,500/µL indicate mild neutropenia, and below 500/µL indicate severe neutropenia with a sharply elevated infection risk. Oncology nurses, hematologists, and infectious disease physicians calculate ANC after each chemotherapy cycle to decide whether a patient needs neutropenic precautions, a dose delay, or growth-factor support like filgrastim.
