Trip Fuel Cost Calculator
Find the fuel cost of a trip.
Result
How it is calculated
The tool first converts distance and consumption into fuel volume, then multiplies by the price: Fuel = Distance / 100 × Consumption and Cost = Fuel × Price. Distance is in kilometres, consumption in litres per 100 km, and price per litre. The fuel volume is shown in litres and the cost in dollars, both rounded to two decimals. Zero is accepted, but a negative or empty field gives no result. The tool assumes the same consumption for the whole trip; it does not add tolls, parking or wear.
Worked example
You drive 450 km in a car that uses 7.5 L/100 km, and fuel costs 1.85 per litre. Fuel needed: 450 / 100 × 7.5 = 33.75 L. Cost: 33.75 × 1.85 = 62.4375, rounded to two decimals. The trip costs about $62.44 in fuel, using 33.75 L.
Common mistakes
- Entering miles per gallon in the consumption field. The field expects litres per 100 km, where a smaller number means a more efficient car.
- Entering the distance in miles while consumption is per 100 km.
- Using the manufacturer's best-case consumption; motorway speed, a loaded car or air conditioning raise real use.
- Forgetting the return leg and entering only the one-way distance.
- Entering the price per gallon or per 100 litres instead of per litre.
About this calculator
This calculator multiplies trip distance by a vehicle's fuel consumption rate (liters per 100 km, or miles per gallon, which measures the same thing the other way round) and then by the fuel price to estimate total fuel needed and its cost, handling the unit conversion between L/100km and MPG systems automatically. The core relationship is fuel used = distance × (consumption/100), and cost = fuel used × price per liter or gallon.
Road-trippers and commuters budgeting for gas before a long drive, rideshare and delivery drivers estimating operating costs, and families comparing whether to drive or fly based on fuel expense all use this. Enter the trip distance, your vehicle's fuel consumption, and the local fuel price to get the estimated fuel volume and cost.
