Sazhen to Meter Converter
Enter a length and pick a direction to convert between sazhen and meters.

How it is calculated
The conversion uses one fixed factor, 1 sazhen = 2.1336 m. Going from sazhen to metres the tool multiplies: m = sazhen × 2.1336. Going from metres to sazhen it divides: sazhen = m / 2.1336, which is the same as multiplying by about 0.4687. The factor comes from the traditional definition of the sazhen as seven English feet, or three arshins. The direction choice decides which way the value is converted; if no direction is given, it converts sazhen to metres. Results are shown to four decimals, and the value must be above zero, so zero and negative lengths return no result. The tool also prints the rate and the reverse rate for reference.
Worked example
A pre-revolutionary land deed gives a plot frontage of 25 sazhen. Multiply by the factor: 25 × 2.1336 = 53.3400 m. Going the other way, a 100 m length equals 100 / 2.1336 = 46.8691 sazhen. For a quick mental estimate, remember that a sazhen is a little over 2 metres, so 25 sazhen should land a little over 50 m, which matches.
Common mistakes
- Mixing the sazhen with other old Russian units: the arshin is one third of a sazhen, and the versta is a much longer road distance, so the factor here applies to sazhen only.
- Choosing the wrong direction and reading metres as sazhen: check the unit shown after the result.
- Using a rounded factor of 2 or 2.13 for precise work: on a long distance the error grows to several metres.
- Assuming every old document means the same sazhen: some sources describe other kinds of sazhen, and this tool uses the standard 2.1336 m value only.
- Entering a negative or zero value for a length, which returns no result.
About this calculator
The sazhen was a traditional Russian unit of length used before the country adopted the metric system in 1918, equal to three arshins or seven English feet, which fixes it at exactly 1 sazhen = 2.1336 meters. It sits inside an older Russian system that also included the arshin and the versta, all commonly seen in pre-revolutionary land records, church and building plans, and classic Russian literature such as measurements of a room or a person’s height.
Historians, genealogists, and museum curators reading old Russian deeds, maps, or architectural drawings still need to convert sazhen figures into meters to understand actual sizes. This calculator lets you enter a value in either unit and instantly get the equivalent in the other, using the standard 2.1336 m conversion factor.
