How it is calculated

The tool divides the yearly pay by the hours actually worked in a year: hourly = salary / (hours × weeks), where salary is the annual amount, hours is hours per week and weeks is paid-and-worked weeks per year. Weekly pay is hourly × hours and monthly pay is simply salary / 12.

If you leave hours or weeks empty (or enter zero), the tool assumes 40 hours and 52 weeks. A negative salary gives no result. Amounts are shown in US dollars with two decimals. Note that the weekly figure follows your weeks input, while the monthly figure always spreads the year over 12 equal parts.

Worked example

Take a salary of 60,000 with 40 hours a week and 50 working weeks (two weeks of unpaid leave). Total hours are 40 × 50 = 2,000. Hourly pay is 60,000 / 2,000 = $30.00. Weekly pay is 30 × 40 = $1,200.00, and monthly pay is 60,000 / 12 = $5,000.00.

Common mistakes

  • Entering a monthly or net figure in the salary box. The field expects the yearly amount, so a monthly number gives an hourly rate twelve times too low.
  • Leaving weeks at the 52 default when you get no paid holiday. Using 48 or 50 weeks raises the true hourly rate.
  • Counting overtime or unpaid lunch breaks in the weekly hours, which hides what you really earn per hour worked.
  • Comparing a gross salary with an hourly offer quoted after tax, or the other way round.

About this calculator

This calculator converts an annual salary into an equivalent hourly rate, along with weekly and monthly figures, typically by dividing the annual amount by the standard 2,080 working hours in a year (52 weeks × 40 hours) — the reverse of the more familiar hourly-to-annual conversion.

Job seekers use it to compare a salaried offer against an hourly-paid position on equal footing, freelancers and contractors use it to benchmark their day rate against what a salaried employee in the same role effectively earns per hour, and HR teams use it to communicate compensation consistently across salaried and hourly job postings. Enter the annual salary and hours worked per week to find the hourly, weekly, and monthly equivalents.
