Margin of Safety Calculator
Find your margin of safety.

How it is calculated
The tool takes your actual (or budgeted) sales and your breakeven sales, both as money amounts for the same period. It computes margin of safety (%) = (actual − breakeven) ÷ actual × 100 and the cushion in currency, actual − breakeven. Note that the percentage is measured against actual sales, not against breakeven.
Actual sales must be above zero and breakeven cannot be negative. If breakeven is higher than actual sales, the result is negative, meaning the business is already below breakeven. The tool does not compute breakeven itself; that comes from fixed costs divided by the contribution margin ratio. Amounts are displayed in dollars.
Worked example
Sales are $250,000 and the breakeven point is $175,000. The cushion is 250,000 − 175,000 = $75,000.00. As a share of actual sales, 75,000 ÷ 250,000 = 0.30, so the margin of safety is 30.00%. Sales could drop by 30% before the business stops covering its fixed costs, assuming costs behave as in the breakeven calculation.
Common mistakes
- Dividing by breakeven sales instead of actual sales; that gives 42.86% here, not 30%.
- Entering breakeven in units and actual sales in money, or covering different periods such as monthly breakeven against annual sales.
- Using profit instead of sales as the actual figure. The formula compares revenue levels, not earnings.
- Reading a negative margin as a typing error. It means sales are already below breakeven and the business is making a loss.
- Treating a high margin as permanent: adding fixed costs raises breakeven and shrinks the cushion.
About this calculator
Margin of safety measures how far a company's actual (or budgeted) sales can fall before it slips into a loss, expressed as a percentage: Margin of safety = (Actual sales − Breakeven sales) / Actual sales × 100%, where breakeven sales is the revenue level at which total contribution margin exactly covers fixed costs.
Management accountants and financial analysts use this figure in cost-volume-profit (CVP) analysis to gauge operating risk: a high margin of safety means a business has a large cushion against a sales downturn, while a low or negative one signals that even a modest drop in sales could push the business into losses, which is critical information when deciding whether to add fixed costs like new equipment or leases.
Small business owners setting sales targets, finance students studying CVP and breakeven analysis, and startup founders evaluating how much runway a dip in revenue would leave all use this calculation to translate breakeven analysis into a concrete risk cushion.
