How it is calculated
Fuel economy is entered in miles per gallon (MPG) and the price per gallon. The tool divides: cost per mile = price per gallon ÷ MPG, and cost per 100 miles = cost per mile × 100. The logic is that one gallon carries you MPG miles, so each mile uses 1 ÷ MPG of a gallon and costs that share of the price. Both results are rounded to two decimals in the tool's default currency, so a cost per mile of a few cents is shown only to the cent. The 100-mile figure holds more detail for comparisons. An MPG of zero or below, or a negative price, gives no result; a zero price gives zero cost.
Worked example
A car does 28 MPG and gas costs 3.75 per gallon. Cost per mile: 3.75 ÷ 28 = 0.1339, shown as $0.13. Cost per 100 miles: 0.1339 × 100 = 13.39, shown as $13.39. For a 500-mile road trip that is 5 × 13.39 = about 66.95 in fuel (66.96 without rounding). Rounding the per-mile figure to $0.13 first would give 65.00, so use the 100-mile figure for trips.
Common mistakes
- Entering litres per 100 km in the MPG field. The two scales run in opposite directions, so a thrifty car with 5 L/100 km would look like a gas guzzler at 5 MPG.
- Mixing US and imperial gallons. An imperial gallon is larger than a US gallon, so the MPG figure and the price per gallon must use the same gallon.
- Multiplying the rounded $0.13 per mile by a long distance. The rounding to cents costs you a couple of dollars over 500 miles; use the cost per 100 miles figure instead.
- Using a car's rated MPG while mostly driving short city trips with a cold engine, where real economy is usually lower.
- Treating the figure as the full cost of driving. It counts fuel only, not maintenance, tyres, insurance or depreciation.
About this calculator
Cost per mile is simply the price of fuel per gallon divided by your vehicle's fuel economy in miles per gallon: cost per mile = price per gallon ÷ MPG. A car getting 30 MPG at $3.60 per gallon costs 12 cents per mile in fuel alone, while a truck getting 15 MPG at the same price costs 24 cents per mile — showing directly how efficiency and fuel price combine into a single, comparable number.
This per-mile figure is what fleet managers use to compare operating costs across different vehicles and set mileage reimbursement rates, what rideshare and delivery drivers use to know their real margin after fuel on every trip, and what everyday drivers use to fairly compare the running cost of a fuel-efficient car against a larger vehicle before a purchase, or to budget for a long road trip by multiplying the per-mile rate by planned distance.
This calculator takes your vehicle's MPG and current fuel price per gallon to give you an exact cost per mile (plus the cost per 100 miles; if you only know a price per liter, multiply it by 3.785 to get the price per gallon first), so you can compare vehicles or estimate trip costs without doing the division by hand.
