How it is calculated
The ratio is the liquid weight divided by the dry coffee weight: ratio = yield ÷ dose. Dose is the ground coffee in the basket, in grams, and yield is the weight of espresso in the cup, in grams. The tool shows it in the usual barista form, 1:x, with x rounded to one decimal, and also as a plain number rounded to two decimals. The two can differ slightly because of rounding. Both values must be above zero. The tool only compares the two weights; it does not know the extraction time, grind, water temperature or the coffee's roast, all of which also decide how the shot tastes. Weigh the yield on a scale rather than going by volume, since crema makes volume unreliable.
Worked example
A barista doses 18.5 g of ground coffee and the espresso in the cup weighs 40 g. Divide yield by dose: 40 ÷ 18.5 = 2.162. The tool displays the ratio as 1:2.2 and the decimal as 2.16. That means each gram of coffee produced about 2.16 grams of liquid. Compared with a 1:2.0 target, the shot ran a little longer; stopping at about 37 g would have given exactly 1:2.0.
Common mistakes
- Entering the volume in millilitres instead of the weight in grams. Crema makes volume read much larger than the actual liquid weight.
- Entering the yield including the cup. Tare the empty cup first, so only the espresso is weighed.
- Swapping dose and yield. The ratio would then show 1:0.5 instead of 1:2.
- Reading 1:2.2 as exactly 2.2. The displayed ratio is rounded to one decimal and the real value is 2.16.
- Using the dose that was weighed before grinding. Weigh the coffee actually in the basket, since some grounds stay in the grinder.
About this calculator
The espresso brew ratio compares dose (the dry ground coffee in the portafilter) to yield (the liquid espresso weight in the cup), written as dose:yield — a 1:2 ratio for an 18g dose means pulling 36g of espresso out. This single number, alongside extraction time, is what specialty coffee shops use to define and dial in a shot.
A shorter ratio like 1:1.5 to 1:2 produces a classic “normale” shot — more concentrated and syrupy — while a longer ratio like 1:2.5 to 1:3 gives a “lungo”, more diluted and often used as the base for milk drinks; baristas adjust grind size and dose specifically to hit a target ratio within roughly 25 to 30 seconds of extraction, and the Specialty Coffee Association’s brewing guidelines are built around exactly this dose-to-yield framework rather than volume measurements, since weighing both sides of the equation on a scale is far more repeatable than eyeballing cup fill lines.
Enter your dose and yield weights and this calculator returns the exact ratio, so you can compare it against your target and adjust your next shot accordingly.
