How it is calculated
The tool divides total assets by total shareholders' equity: EM = Assets / Equity. It also reports the share of assets not financed by equity: (1 − Equity / Assets) × 100, shown as a percent and floored at 0%. Both inputs are amounts in the same currency, taken from the balance sheet at the same date. Equity must be above zero, otherwise nothing is shown, and assets cannot be negative. Note that the "debt share" is really all liabilities, including payables and accruals, not only borrowed money. The multiplier is rounded to two decimals.
Worked example
A company has total assets of 500,000 and shareholders' equity of 200,000. Multiplier: 500,000 / 200,000 = 2.50. Share of assets not financed by equity: 1 − 200,000 / 500,000 = 1 − 0.40 = 0.60, shown as 60.00%. So each unit of equity supports 2.5 units of assets.
Common mistakes
- Using total liabilities or total debt in place of total assets; the numerator is assets, which equals liabilities plus equity.
- Using a figure that is not shareholders' equity, such as share capital alone, instead of the full equity total.
- Reading the second figure as interest-bearing debt only. It counts every liability on the balance sheet.
- Mixing dates, for example year-end assets with an equity value from an earlier quarter.
- Calling a high multiplier automatically bad. It shows leverage but not whether the debt is affordable, and it varies a lot between industries.
About this calculator
This calculator computes the equity multiplier, total assets ÷ total shareholders' equity, which shows how many dollars of assets a company controls for every dollar of equity its owners have put in. A multiplier of 1 would mean the company is entirely equity-financed with no debt at all; anything higher reflects assets funded by liabilities.
It's the leverage component of the classic DuPont ROE breakdown — ROE = net profit margin × asset turnover × equity multiplier — which analysts use to see whether a company's return on equity is being driven by genuine operating efficiency or simply amplified by taking on more debt.
